Now that Lionsgate has officially signed on Francis Lawrence as director of The Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire, production can move forward. But it seems another screenwriter may be coming on board to rewrite the script.
Award-winning writer Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire) wrote the first draft of the Catching Fire screenplay, which book series author Suzanne Collins had gone over. But according to The Hollywood Reporter, Lionsgate is talking to another writer to go over the draft.
According to THR, Lionsgate wants Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3; Little Miss Sunshine) to rewrite the Catching Fire screenplay before filming begins.
Some fans are worried for what this could mean for the movie, but rest easy: it’s fairly common practice for multiple writers to work on various drafts of a screenplay before filming begins. With The Hunger Games, director Gary Ross and Collins herself rewrote the original draft written by veteran screenwriter Billy Ray. The fact that Lionsgate is in talks with Arndt to write the next draft of Catching Fire simply means they are moving closer to filming the movie.
Production on Catching Fire is expected to begin in late summer. Before that happens, new director Lawrence will have to cast several high-profile new roles for the sequel.
