The Hunger Games movie will officially be released on Bluray and DVD in the U.S. at 12:01 am on August 18th, confirming previous theories about the movie’s home release date. A digital download will become available at the same time.
Lionsgate is counting down the next twelve weeks until the movie’s home release, starting with the official DVD trailer release on Entertainment Weekly. The DVD/Bluray will be avalable for pre-order starting on Friday.
They’re hoping a midnight release will create the same frenzy that the movie’s theatrical release did.
“The motion picture event of the year is poised to become the home entertainment event of the year,” Lionsgate’s VP of Home Entertainment Ron Schwartz told EW. “With a midnight launch and midnight retail events scheduled at stores around the country, we expect to replicate the same level of consumer excitement generated by the film’s theatrical debut.”
According to EW, the two-disc set will include three hours of bonus materials, including “The World is Watching: Making of The Hunger Games,” an eight-part documentary about making the movie, plus interviews with the cast and crew, and a feature on changes that were made from the book. The Capitol propaganda film that was shown during the Reaping scene in the movie is also included in the bonus features.
