Joss Whedon, you just finished work on the biggest superhero movie in the known universe, and it has broken box office records, been praised by everyone and their grandmother, and raised you from mere Geek God to veritable Hollywood Living Legend. What are you going to do next?”
Such is the question we’d all like to ask the man who went from cult icon with “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” to big-time Hollywood director with “The Avengers” last month. One thing is for sure, Whedon won’t be taking time off to go to Disney World. Let’s take a look at what Whedon has in the works, from movies to comic books to webseries.
Much Ado About Nothing: This is how we know, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that Whedon is not taking a vacation to Disney World to celebrate the success of “The Avengers.” The last time he was supposed to take a vacation to Europe with his wife, Kai Cole (after production on “The Avengers” wrapped), the intrepid director instead took four weeks to make a black-and-white adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing.” In his house. With his own funding. And completely independent of any studio or Hollywood intervention. No, this is not a man who wastes time with vacations when there is awesome film and television to be made. “Much Ado About Nothing” will be released via the film festival circuit soon.
In Your Eyes: Described as a supernatural romance, Whedon’s in-production independent film tells the story of two wildly different people separated by distance but still able to communicate and see each other, despite having never met in person. The film is from Bellwether Pictures, Whedon’s brand new production company, and stars Zoe Kazan, Michael Stahl-David, and Mark Feuerstein.
Wastelanders: While we don’t yet know much about Joss Whedon’s upcoming webseries with Warren Ellis, we do know that it will be a sci-fi, dystopian story with absolutely no singing (if Ellis has anything to say about it). The webseries is still in the very early stages of production, but given the success of Whedon’s last webseries, “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog,” fans have high hopes.
Dr. Horrible 2: Speaking of webseries, Joss Whedon, brother Jed, and sister-in-law Maurissa are hard at work (at least, we hope they are) on the sequel to “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog,” starring Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion, and Felicia Day. The story of one super-villain’s rise to super-villainy wass touching, hilarious, melodic, and absolutely ripe for a sequel. Needless to say, we can’t wait.
The Buffyverse comics: It’s no secret that comic books have a very special place in Whedon’s heart. Besides his extensive career writing comic books, Whedon also just finished the most humongous comic book movie known to man. The characters of the Buffyverse are going strong, with “Buffy Season 9” and “Angel and Faith” in full swing from Dark Horse, and both Willow and Spike getting their own new spin-off series.
With all that in the works, Whedonites have a lot to look forward to.
