A new reality TV show inspired by The Hunger Games is coming soon to The CW — and while network executives may be hoping to play off the popularity of the books-turned-movie franchise, fans of the series may be a little creeped out by the show’s concept.
It’s easy enough to feel unsettled by a TV show that’s inspired by a story about children killing each other for televised entertainment. But fans who know what inspired author Suzanne Collins to write The Hunger Games will be even more spooked.
That’s because Collins says the idea for The Hunger Games began when she was watching TV, flipping channels, and discovered it was nearly impossible to tell the difference between reality TV shows meant for entertainment, and news coverage of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The Hunger Games were, in some aspect, meant as a response to these blurring lines between reality and entertainment. Yet that message seems lost on the TV executives and creators behind the new TV show “The Hunt.”
According to EW, the new show pits twenty-four contestants (twelve teams of two) against each other in a fight for survival. The teams are dropped off in the wilderness with no food, water, or shelter. They must then compete against each other, using survival and hunting skills. Along the way, they’re meant to “capture” other team mates until only one winner remains, getting to take home a sweet cash prize.
Is this sounding a little familiar, Hunger Games fans? The similarities are eerie (twenty-four tributes; twenty-four contestants; a fight for survival; only one winner), and despite the TV show’s seemingly “harmless” approach (the contestants don’t actually kill each other), it seems “The Hunt” is walking a fine line — one that Collins had hoped to define more clearly when she wrote The Hunger Games.
Meanwhile, The CW is also still developing a fictional TV series based on The Selection by Kiera Cass, another YA dystopian series that has drawn some light comparisons to The Hunger Games. However, the original pilot was put on hold and, at last word, was being reworked with a new cast.
