Remember the train wreck that was TLC’s “Jon & Kate Plus Eight”? Imagine being one of those kids … growing up in the spotlight … watching your parents’ marriage fall apart in the public eye … and then years later, being dragged back into the spotlight.
That’s sort of the idea behind Something Real by Heather Demetrios, the coming-of-age story for one unusual teenage girl, who is forced to fight her inner demons and stand up to the ones she loves most in extreme circumstances.
Something Real paints the unique story of Bonnie Baker (who goes by “Chloe” now), who is just starting to recover from the traumatic experience of growing up in front of reality TV cameras. She’s finally established some real friendships and may finally have her first real boyfriend – when those traumatic TV cameras come barreling unwanted back into her life.
Demetrios does a masterful job of capturing the real horror of live in front of the cameras, while balancing the angst with humor and romance. Each element of this book is written elegantly, and the balance is a perfect tone for a coming-of-age story that makes you cringe, soar, and fight back right along with Bonnie/Chloe.
Something Real is in stores February 4th. here is the official synopsis:
Winner of the 2012 PEN New England Discovery Award!
There’s nothing real about reality TV.
Seventeen-year-old Bonnie™ Baker has grown up on TV—she and her twelve siblings are the stars of one-time hit reality show Baker’s Dozen. Since the show’s cancellation and the scandal surrounding it, Bonnie™ has tried to live a normal life, under the radar and out of the spotlight. But it’s about to fall apart…because Baker’s Dozen is going back on the air. Bonnie™’s mom and the show’s producers won’t let her quit and soon the life she has so carefully built for herself, with real friends (and maybe even a real boyfriend), is in danger of being destroyed by the show. Bonnie™ needs to do something drastic if her life is ever going to be her own—even if it means being more exposed than ever before.
Melissa de la Cruz had a great 2013 and it looks like her success will be following her into 2014. Besides a television series being made from her “Withces of East End” book series, her New York Times vampire bestseller, “Blue Bloods” ended at the top of the charts but this is only the beginning. The beloved young adult vampire series, “Blue Bloods” was so loved that even though the series ended, she has decided to introduce her fans to a spinoff series that continues the story of “Blue Bloods” but with a new and old characters that center around the once human conduit, now vampire, Oliver Hazard Perry.
The title of the new series is “Vampires of Manhattan” and has the vampires trying to build “Millennial” lives in Manhattan. There is war among the vampires as well as the evil of their world.
Here is the official synopsis:
Hero of this sexy, paranormal action tale is Oliver Hazard-Perry, former human conduit, and Manhattan’s only human-turned-vampire, now the head of the Blue Bloods Coven. When his all-too-human lover is found murdered on the eve of the coven’s annual Four Hundred Ball–a celebration meant to usher in a new era in vampire society and to mark the re-unification of the Coven after decades of unrest and decay–Oliver is devastated.
Now, not only is he trying to create a new world order for the immortal elite, he’s the prime suspect and is stalked by the newly installed head of the vampire secret police. Because according to the new rules, vampires who take human life can now be executed. Burned.
How can an immortal sentenced to die fight back? He has to find the killer–and the answers lie deep in vampire lore.
It has been rumored that Mimi Force and Kingsley Martin will appear at some point in the book as well as Schuyler and Jack and of course the wolves. Other rumors include a few be deaths and a ball as well as the possibility that there may only be two books in this series.
Fans are excited that the story will continue and it looks like there will be even more good news in her future.
Dark Horse Comics has revealed a preview for this week’s “Skyman” #1, the debut of the new super hero’s own four issue mini-series. “Skyman” #1 hit stores this Wednesday, January 15, and is written by Joshua Hale Fialkov (“Afro Samurai: Resurrection,” “I, Vampire”) with pencils by Manuel Garcia and inks by Javier Bergantino Menor (a.k.a. Bit). The issue features regular and variant covers by Freddie Williams II (“Robin,” “The Movement”) and Dan Scott.
Skyman was introduced last year in the pages of “Captain Midnight.”
First, the actress won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for her role in American Hustle. It’s her second year-in a row winning a Globe; last year, she took home the award for Best Actress for Silver Linings Playbook.
Of course, the night of Globes was not all about victory for Lawrence. Her white with black trim Dior gown spawned an Internet meme, after viewers took to the Internet to compare the dress to the outfit Ariel wears when she first gets legs in The Little Mermaid.
Since then, tons of people (including a few famous faces), have posted photos of themselves in their own home-made recreations of the dress (most often using a white bed sheet and two black belts).
Lawrence also nabbed headlines for her Golden Globes red carpet photo-bombing of singer Taylor Swift.
More recently, Lawrence has been at the center of a controversy surrounding her American Hustle director David O. Russell, who came under fire for comparing Lawrence’s treatment on The Hunger Games sets to “slavery.”
“I personally think they should give her a bit of breathing room over there because they’re [Lionsgate] printing money,” Russell told The Daily News. “I’ll tell you what it is about that girl – talk about ‘12 Years Of Slavery,’ that’s what the [‘Hunger Games’] franchise is — and I’m going to get in so much trouble for saying that.”
Russell has since issued an apology, after the comment drew massive criticism. “Clearly, I used a stupid analogy in a poor attempt at humor,” Russell said in a statement. “I realized it the minute I said it and I am truly sorry.”
Valiant Comics has released a preview of the third issue of their hit new series, “Unity.” At the end of “Unity” #2, Livewire had taken control of the X-O Manowar armor from Aric of Dacia. In “Unity” #3, see how the armor’s new bearer puts it into action. The issue hits comic shops this Wednesday, January 15, and is written by Matt Kindt with art and cover by Doug Braithwaite.
The publisher had this to say about the issue:
On an airtight team of stone-cold soldiers, Amanda McKee is the one variable in the equation that equals absolute kill. Now, as the last woman standing against the unstoppable force known as X-O Manowar, the Harbinger Foundation’s most seasoned technopath has just added one new item to her resume – newest bearer of the X-O Manowar armor and the finger behind the trigger of the universe’s most powerful weapon. Watch out world…this means trouble.

TVLine.com just announced today, Jan. 11 that two ‘Star Wars‘ stars are set to make special appearances on “The Big Bang Theory” later this season. James Earl Jones who played the voice of Darth Vader and Carrie Fisher who played Princess Leia in the “Star Wars” movies will be coming across Jim Parsons’ character, Sheldon. This should be interesting.
They will be playing themselves. This makes fans question what they will be doing there and how Sheldon will take them or rather how they will take Sheldon.
“The Big Bang Theory” is TV’s most-watched and highest-rated comedy as well as a syndication powerhouse, even in it’s seventh season. At this time there is no word on an eighth season as the main stars are still in contract negotiations. At this time, Mayim Bialik and Melissa Rauch, who plays Amy and Bernadette, have signed their new deals $60,000 per-episode.
The three leads, Jim Parsons, Kaley Cuoco, and Johnny Galecki are currently getting paid $300,000 per episde while holding out for a $200,000 raise to $500,000 while Simon Helberg and Kunal Nayyar get $125,000 and $75,000 and are looking for more as well.
More than likely if contract negations can be met the show will continue for multiple seasons.
UPDATE: It was just confirmed that the ‘Weapon’ teaser is of a new Iron Fistongoing.
Happy New Year! The calendar may have changed but the Marvel Comics teasers keep rolling in. This time we have a single teaser with the word ‘Weapon.’
Usually accompanying the teaser are a team of creators. This is different, as there is only one name — Kaare Andrews. Andrews is a writer and artist who has been on multiple X-Men titles including ‘Ultimate Comics X-Men’ and ‘Astonishing X-Men’ to name a few. So it’s conceivable to believe he will be doing the writing and drawing for this new #1 issue. But what is the book?
It could be a new X-title, considering his history. But ‘weapon’ seems to scream ‘Iron Fist’ to me. We should find out soon as the book comes out in April and solicits should be coming soon.
So stay tuned for more teasers and an update to this story as we get it.
