‘A Monster Calls’ by Patrick Ness movie adaptation to start filming in September
A movie adaptation of Patrick Ness‘s acclaimed and emotionally charged young adult novel A Monster Calls is moving forward.
River Road Entertainment, Participant Media, Lionsgate International, and Focus Features announced today that they are teaming up to fund and distribute A Monster Calls, which is being produced by Apache.
Ness himself is writing the screenplay, with The Orphanage director Juan Antonio Bayona directing. Filming is expected to begin in September, with the film tentatively slated for release in 2016.
“I cannot TELL you how excited I am for the Monster Calls movie,” Ness wrote on Twitter. “I’ve seen early pre-viz and it’s going to be FREAKING AMAZING!”
A Monster Calls, which Ness wrote from an idea by late author Siobhan Dowd, follows a young boy, who uses a fantasy world of monsters to escape the trauma of his mother’s terminal illness and bullying at school.
Originally from Washington state, Ness now lives in the UK. He is also the author of the critically-acclaimed Chaos Walking trilogy and More Than This.
