Cassandra Clare reflects on the end of ‘The Mortal Instruments’ series

Cassandra Clare reflects on the end of  ‘The Mortal Instruments’ series

The Mortal Instruments are coming to an end. The best-selling young adult book series reaches its finale this week, with Tuesday’s publication of the sixth and final book, City of Heavenly Fire.

It’s a milestone that is both exhilarating and bittersweet — both for fans, and author Cassandra Clare.

“This does mean saying goodbye,” Clare told Novel Novice in an exclusive interview. “I may get to write about Shadowhunters again, but not these Shadowhunters. I won’t get to write another Jace, another Clary, another Alec. Every character is different. I’ll miss their banter and interactions.”

City of Heavenly Fire may be the final book in The Mortal Instruments, but it isn’t the first time fans thought they were saying goodbye to these specific Shadowhuners. Originally, the series was published as a trilogy, with the third book, City of Glass, being released in 2009.

“I originally had the idea that after City of Glass I would spin off into a story that centered around Simon,” Clare said. “There was even the idea that it would be a graphic novel — there’s very early drafts of the graphic novel script lying around! When I started to work on it seriously though I realized it wouldn’t work for me. I had too much left to say about the other characters, especially Jace, Clary, Magnus and Alec.”

However, this time Clare seems certain that the original Mortal Instruments series is over. She is far from done writing about the world of the Shadowhunters. Having already completed one trilogy of prequels, The Infernal Devices, Clare has planned at least two more sets of trilogies in this universe — another set of prequels, and one that looks to the new generation of Shadowhunters.

Clare also recently co-wrote a collection of short stories based on the popular character Magnus with her friends and fellow authors Maureen Johnson and Sarah Rees Brennan. It will be available in a complete set known as The Bane Chronicles in November. (The original stories were only released in electronic form.)

To celebrate Tuesday’s release of City of Heavenly Fire, fans can enter to win a complete boxed set of The Mortal Instruments books and a one-of-a-kind Mortal Instruments hoodie.

First look at ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1’ includes new images

It’s not the first trailer or teaser-trailer fans have been waiting for, but Lionsgate has thrown a small bone at fans of The Hunger Games franchise with a first look at The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1.

The so-called “first look” can be found via a new website, and features the first official images of Julianne Moore as President Coin, as well as a short animated GIF of Moore in character, and a few other still images from the film. Fans can also read a Q&A with Mockingjay director Francis Lawrence, producer Nina Jacobson, and screenwriter Peter Craig, plus watch a video interview with Moore.

The site is a bit confusing to navigate, but if fans dig deep enough, they can find a few new still images from Mockingjay (including some behind-the-scenes photos), and a chance to read part of the screenplay.

You can find all the images a bit more easily by checking out the slideshow attached to this article (above)!

Of course, Lionsgate still hasn’t said when a teaser or trailer for Mockingjay will debut – and that’s really what fans are clamouring right now. By this time last year, a trailer for Catching Fire had already been released. Granted, Mockingjay is still filming (and is expected to wrap-up later this month) — but most of the filming going on right now is for Part 2 of the film, which doesn’t come out until next year.

Fans just want a peek at Part 1, due in theaters this November.

What do you think of this initial sneak peek? What do you hope to see in a trailer?

Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer joins the cast of  ‘Divergent’ sequel ‘Insurgent’

Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment have announced the first new cast member to join the Divergent sequel, Insurgent – and it’s none other than Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer.

Spencer, who won both an Oscar and a Golden Globe for her 2011 performance in The Help, will play Amity leader Johanna — a character who features prominently in both the second and third books of Veronica Roth’s best-selling trilogy.

Production on Insurgent is expected to begin sometime this month, with theatrical release set for March 2015. Divergent stars Shailene Woodley, Theo James, and Kate Winslet are all expected to reprise their roles in the new movie.

Meanwhile, the third and final book in the series, Allegiant, will actually be split into two films — a controversial move that many fans think is unnecessary, and greedy on the studio’s part.

Earlier today, Lionsgate executives finally spoke out about the decision to split Allegiant, saying they believe there is “more than enough material there to make two substantial, satisfying films.”

Mockingjay’ is almost done filming, but Lionsgate just cast a new role

Filming on the two-part The Hunger Games: Mockingjay movies has almost finished, but Lionsgate just today announced another cast member.

Lionsgate revealed today that “Chicago Fire” actress Michelle Forbes will play the role of Lt. Jackson in the Mockingjay movies, which are scheduled to wrap filming later this month. Lt. Jackson is a soldier from District 13, who ventures into the Capitol with Katniss towards the end of the last book.

Besides her recurring role on “Chicago Fire,” Forbes has also appeared in “True Blood,” “The Killing,” “Prison Break,” “Battlestar Galactica,” and will appear in the current new season of the BBC America hit drama, “Orphan Black.”

The two Mockingjay movies have been filming simultaneously since September. The first movie is set for release in November, with the second movie following a year later.

Fans are anxiously awaiting a first look at the new Mockingjay movie, but so-far there has been no confirmation of when a trailer will finally appear. (Recent rumors that it would debut at the Cannes Film Festival this year have not been confirmed.)

Series 8 of ‘Dr. Who’ begins filming today

Series 8 of ‘Dr. Who’ begins filming today

Filming for Series 8 of ‘Doctor Who‘ is set to begin today according to Jenna Coleman, who plays Clara Oswald, the Eleventh and soon to be twelfth generation of the Doctor in the BBC hit series, “Doctor Who”.

Season 8 is set to take about eight months filming which puts the series to start in the fall, this has been confirmed at this time. Also, there has been confirmation that there will have “at least” 13 episodes and the season will not be “split” like in the past.

This is what Steven Moffet said about series 8,

“There’s always a point in production, usually half-way, maybe two thirds, through a series when you realize you’re juggling at least one aspect of each show at once: maybe a press launch for one, another in the edit and I might not have written the last one. You wake up in the night thinking about 13 emergencies, each of them equally calamitous. As a lifestyle choice, it’s questionable.”

“One of the hardest things for me to do is work out when I’ll have time to write. A whole week can disappear when I haven’t had a moment to sit down. I was amazed recently when I got a script ready in time for the tone meeting.”

Series 8 will bring the new generation of the Doctor, Peter Capaldi to the fans.

So, how do you think the new Doctor will interact with Clara? How do you think the fans will receive him?

‘Being Human’ to return to SyFy on Jan. 13

SyFy is bringing the fourth season of “Being Human” back on Jan 13. The show will pick up four months after last season’s finale.

Josh is still stuck in his wolf form and Nora and Aidan are trying to save him.

Aidan will run into what appears to be his ex wife and will cause him to make a lot of tough choices. These poor vampires can never have any peace or love.

Sally is in this balck death hole with the witch Donna and she is trapped there. But, Sally finds that she has magical powers of her own.

The past seasons of “Being Human” have been very strong and there is hope that in 2015 there will be a fifth season but it is too eary to tell.

It’s counterpart and predecessor on BBC ended last March with it’s fifth season being it’s last. But, that show suffered from entire cast changes and weak viewing times.
