Class in session by ‘Monsters U’ taking first over zombies and superheroes

Zombie masses bull-rushed into theaters this weekend, but it was the nostalgiac prequel animation “Monsters U” that was at the top of its class.

Billy Crystal and John Goodman reprise their voice acting roles as would-be great monster scares Mike and Sullivan in Pixar’s “Monsters Inc.” franchise. The second animated installment garnered $82. million to top the weekend of June 21 to June 23.

“Monsters U” wasn’t the only debuting movie over the latter June week’s ending. Brad Pitt stars in “World War Z”, a movie adapting from the whelmingly popular book. “World War Z” ran away with a second place for June 21 and 23 that whelms in piling up over the second weekend showing of “Man of Steel”.

While “World War Z” had ticket sales of $66. million over the Superman adaptation’s $41.2 million, “Man of Steel” remains formidable in both the domestic and international box office soaring.

David S. Goyer’s screenplay has its live action production totaling a worldwide $398.3 million, with #188. million taken in international showings. With “Man of Steel” ranking fifth for domestic gross in the box office, the Warner Bros. film is on the speeding bullet track to overtake the $216. million by “Star Trek Into Darkness”, $228.4 million set by third placing “Fast & Furious 6” and the early in the year pace-making $234.5 million from “Oz The Great and Powerful” at second place.

“Iron Man 3” holds first place in 2013’s domestic gross at $403.1 million.

Next weekend premieres (according to Yahoo Movies) includes two heavily marketed features: action-comedy “The Heat” starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, as well as Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx starring in the action-adventure “White House Down”.

Boom! Studios saves the day for Archaia Entertainment

Boom! Studios saves the day for Archaia Entertainment

Boom! Studios saves the day for Archaia Entertainment. Recent industry developments have seen Boom! Studios acquire Archaia Entertainment (responsible for graphic releases: Jim Henson’s A Tale of Sand, Mouse Guard, and Rust, just to name a few). This development places Boom! Studios in the very interesting position of being the largest independently controlled comics and graphic novel company in the game (watch out DC Comics and Marvel Comics). This sounds like good news for creatives who are fortunate to work with this creator friendly company. Boom! Studios released the following PR:

BOOM! Studios, the Eisner and Harvey Award-winning comic book and graphic novel publisher and two-time winner of Diamond Comics Distributors’ prestigious “Best Publisher” Gem Award, has merged with Eisner and Harvey Award-winning Archaia Entertainment, the publisher of graphic novels including Mouse Guard, A Tale of Sand, Rust, Spera, Cowboy, and Gunnerkrigg Court. BOOM! Studios will be the surviving company and the Archaia brand shall be maintained as a distinct imprint of BOOM!.

The addition of Archaia positions BOOM!’s catalog of intellectual property as the largest independent company-controlled comic book and graphic novel library, behind only industry titans DC Entertainment (Warner Bros.) and Marvel Entertainment (Disney). BOOM!’s comic books and graphic novels pioneer a new business model, sharing intellectual property ownership between the company and the creators who generate the content. BOOM!’s Chief Executive Officer and founder, Ross Richie, noted, “Our creator-friendly model ensures that creatives are rewarded financially as they generate the franchises of tomorrow. Archaia operates with the same philosophy and objectives, which is one of the many reasons this combination is such a great fit.”

“We are thrilled and excited to join with BOOM!,” Archaia President and Chief Operating Officer Jack Cummins, who will continue in the same role, said. “BOOM! is very committed to maintaining the brand we’ve worked so hard to build and preserving our relationship with our creators, fans, and retailers. They’re fans of Archaia first and foremost, and are avidly working behind the scenes to expand our market penetration and carry our catalog deeper into retail channels. Archaia readers can expect the same editorial approach that has garnered industry-wide awards but we will have a much stronger platform to deliver our content in all forms and channels. I am personally looking forward to bringing our team together with the fantastic team Ross has built.”

Richie added, “Archaia has a terrific track record for creating award-winning, beautiful books with high production values. Jack Cummins, Stephen Christy, Mark Smylie, and the entire Archaia team have built an amazing publisher. With BOOM!’s resources, Archaia fans will see more of the books they love, while retailers will enjoy better business through stronger trade terms.” The companies also plan to put key items from the Archaia catalog back into print.

BOOM! Executive Chairman Scott Lenet of the venture capital firm DFJ Frontier noted, “We are excited to be investors in a profitable, growing company with a fantastic early track record of creating, curating, and marketing properties that audiences genuinely love. We have ambitious plans to continue to fund the company’s expansion in comics, graphic novels, and other media.”

August 2nd sees the release of the first BOOM! Studios feature film, the Universal Pictures-distributed 2 Guns starring Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg, based on the Steven Grant comic book published by BOOM!. The company is currently preparing its second feature film for production: Jeremiah Harm, based on the comic book by Keith Giffen, Alan Grant, and John Mueller, will be directed by Timo Vuourensola of Iron Sky.

Archaia has optioned Royden Lepp’s graphic novel Rust to Twentieth Century Fox. Among Archaia’s other announced deals are the development of Lucid (Warner Bros.), Bolivar (Warner Bros.), and Feeding Ground (Pressman Films).

Recently, legendary creators including writer Paul Jenkins (Wolverine: Origin, Inhumans) and artist Brian Stelfreeze (Batman: Shadow of the Bat, Wednesday Comics) have announced to the industry that BOOM! is their new publishing home. This summer BOOM! also launched the first original comic book Clive Barker has ever created and written, Clive Barker’s Next Testament.

July sees the blockbuster release of Archaia’s Mouse Guard: The Black Axe, created by Eisner Award winner David Petersen, Cyborg 009 in partnership with acclaimed Japanese publisher Ishimori, and The Thrilling Adventure Hour based on the long-running stage play of the same name.

Stan Lee enterprises into new cologne line

Style doesn’t have to go geek culture but mass appeal can expect a new cologne arriving from one of comic book’s guru primes.

Stan Lee has spun the words into a catch-phrase webbing just as famous as his created Spider-Man, but now ‘Nuff Said isn’t just for the fan mail True Believers any longer. With Lee’s signature across the labeling, the JADS International sponsored cologne is the icon’s signature fragrance bottle.

As mighty as Thor from “The Avengers”? Amazing on par with “Amazing Spider-Man”? Like the ascending Hollywood filmmaker’s trend, it’ll be the consumers that will declare whether the scent of bergamot, cedar, white pepper, musk, violet, vetiver and basil is a hit.

The cologne bills as “adventurous as Stan’s superheroes, yet it can make you feel a bit villainous.”

While it has been a trend within geek culture to have sees an uprise from fantasy or science fiction premised signature blends over this decade plus, this is a current breakthrough for the NYC-native’s comics pioneering creative.

‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ Comic Con press release is a fake

A fake press release claiming a new trailer for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire would be introduced at San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) next month by actors Josh Hutcherson, Jennifer Lawrence, and Sam Claflin had fans prematurely excited.

The fake press release hit the web early Saturday before it was discovered to be a fake. Fans (and fan sites) were initially excited by the news — but it turned out to be false.

However, the fake release came on the heels of news that a new trailer for Catching Fire would be released “very soon” — and SDCC has seemed like a likely possibility for its reveal. So far, though, Lionsgate has issued no official word on what (if any) presence Catching Fire will have at Comic Con.

Fans are eager to see more footage from Catching Fire.

‘True Blood’ star to attend Scarefest Horror Convention

Yesterday, June 11, Patti Starr the owner of ScareFest Horror and Paranormal Convention announced via their newsletter and Facebook page that there will be a “True Blood” star in attendance at the convention. That star is none other than Jim Parrack who played Hoyt Fortenberry from 2008-2012.

Jim began playing Hoyt when the show began in 2008 and he was introduced as Jason Stackhouse’s best friend. But, his popularity among fans came when he and then baby vamp Jessica began dating. This romance led fans to love the character even more. However, last season when Jessica left Hoyt, the character was later dropped from the show.

Jim is currently working on projects that include “A Child of God” and “A Night in Old Mexico”.

ScareFest is the horror and paranormal convention that takes place each year in Lexington, KY.

Other guest this year include Grant Wilson, John Zaffis, Steve and Tango from “Ghost Hunters” and Jeffery Combs from “The Reanimator”

Also, ScareFest is going to be holding a gaming section this year as well. It’s called “The Portal” and will have larp’ing, tabletop, and co-splaying.

This will be a great year! Jim Parrack will be signing at his booth so make sure that you

DC Comics tease ‘Lights Out’ for Green Lantern titles in Oct.

Taking a page out of the Marvel Comics playbook, DC Comics just released a teaser image that reads “Lights Out” with a bloody Green Lantern ring dropping to the bottom of the picture.

It’s a jarring image with its simplicity. But it looks like the GLC will have some problems come October.

If you’ve read the first issue of Robert Venditti’s take on Green Lantern, then you know that he is leading the GLC into a battle with the villainous Relic, who seems to have depowered the central power battery on Oa.

So what does it all mean? Well, we will just have to find out come October.

Marvel’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ has John C. Reilly, but for which part?

Marvel’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ has John C. Reilly, but for which part?

For Disney’s most arguably obscure pluck out Marvel Comics’ publication stable, the unsteady Guardians of the Galaxy is going under the (director) Gunn with a spectacular list of capacity actors.

Director James Gunn (“Dawn of the Dead”, “Super”) is a known spotlight himself, with a name for merging idiosynchratic themes to standard genre premises. Not more than two weeks past, powerhouse actress Glenn Close (“Damages”, “Dangerous Liaisons”) gave a whole new outlook towards the ongoing pre-production. Zoe Saldana (“Star Trek Into Darkness”, “Columbiana”) has joined the cast along with Benicio del Toro (“The Wolfman”, “Traffic”).

Now, as of early June, the dotted-line inclusion of John C. Reilly creates a headline buzz. The actor’s career repertoire owns legitimate filmmaking mojo portraying versatile roles stretching a span from dorky comedy (“Step Brothers”) to an Oscar winning musical (“Chicago”) to a porn storied drama (“Boogie Nights”).

Gabs by industry observants shine a perspective upon how gambit taking the Disney movie executes snags of cameo entrenched comics characters on a signature chance to utilize the one-of-a-kinds. Ronan and Rhomann come around every alien species Kree against Skrull warfare.

Ronan the Accuser is one of those cometh grandly via splash page or enters a story at a high point story twist, mostly along an space backdrop plot line. It fits well that Deadline reports the character actor Reilly will take on a highest tier of judicial power within the Kree Empire that answers directly to the sovereign power.

Confirmation still needs to enter elocution here because by IMDB, the role stated is the head of the Nova Corps, Rhomann Dey. Both names can easily be confused along any sources conveyance mill.

Rhomann Dey is an alien from Xandar that directs the space faring law enforcement organization known as the Nova Corps. Since “Guardians of the Galaxy” has been toting more backdrop in deep orbit than across the Big Blue Marble, the scuttlebutt about Nova being part of the movie could extend from the gamut of a Nova Corps. having the involvement.

MTV also reports that Rhomann Dey is more likely the part than Ronan.

What role do you think is the one John C. Reilly has signed on to portray?
