Scott Westerfield’s ‘Uglies’ series in development for TV series
YA author Scott Westerfeld‘s best-selling dystopian series Uglies is in development to become a TV series.
According to Publisher’s Weekly, “Negotiations are in an advanced stage with a U.S. television network to adapt [Westefeld’s] bestselling Uglies books into a TV series.”
Movie rights to the Uglies series have been sold before, but this is the first time (publicly, at least) that the books have been under consideration as a TV series.
With the first book published in 2005, the Uglies series became best-sellers well before The Hunger Games made the dystopian genre a cornerstone of the YA market. The books take place in a futuristic, dystopian world, in which teenagers are surgically transformed into “Pretties” on their 16th birthdays. But heroine Tally ends up running away just before her 16th birthday and teams up with a group of “Uglies” living outside of the system, and learns there is more to the surgeries than she’s been lead to believe.
Westerfeld is also the author of the Leviathan series, and will release a standalone novel this fall, called Afterworlds.

And away we go! Another week stuffed to the gills with new comic book release goodness. Let’s dive right in and take a look at a few titles landing in your local comic shop this week. First up, IDW Publishing revives a character made popular in the pages of the sci-fi/fantasy anthology 2000 A.D. with the debut issue of Rouge Trooper #1 (Brian Ruckley, Alberto Ponticelli, Glenn Fabry) for some future battle front action (be sure to check out the associated video for a peek at a visual timeline of 35 years of 2000 AD presented by Richard Herrero). Next up, Dark Horse Comics gets things rolling with a brand new series from Greg Rucka with Veil #1 (Greg Rucka, Toni Fejzula) and some great looking preview pages (take a look at the associated slide show for a peek). Image Comics has a pair of titles on this week’s list with Starlight #1 (Mark Millar, Goran Parlov, John Cassaday) and Velvet #4 (Ed Brubaker, Steve Epting). Marvel Comics brings back a fan favorite with Moon Knight #1 in what promises to be an interesting take on the cowled crusader (Warren Ellis, Declan Shalvey). Finally, check out something new this week! The comic medium is filled with wonderful stories that you may not find on the traditional beaten path. One such title is Ravenhammer Comics Lucius Hammer (Brian Williams, Christian Colbert) series. With the hook “A hero is defined by his actions. Not the color of his skin”, this title nails the elements essential for a superhero title that is destined to become a comic book icon. That about wraps it up for this round true reader. ‘Divergent’ on track for a ‘Twilight’ level opening weekend box office
‘Divergent’ on track for a ‘Twilight’ level opening weekend box office
Don’t call Divergent “the next Twilight” — but it might be the next Twilight. In terms of box office performance, that is.
Other than being based on YA novels, the two series have little in common — but Divergent, based on the best-selling dystopian trilogy by Veronica Roth, is now on track for a $65 million opening weekend (up from previous predictions) — which could put it close to Twilight‘s actual $69.9 million opening box office.
Analysts say Divergent is tracking similarly to Twilight before it hit theaters in key categories like total awareness, first choice, and definite interest — and even has more interest from male viewers, a feat Twilight never quite managed to achieve.
Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment have already proven successful with two previous YA franchise, Twilight and The Hunger Games. The studio is likely hoping fans of Hunger Games will check out Divergent, as the two series have a lot of thematic similarities and there is crossover appeal.
Divergent hits theaters March 21st.

Matt Ryan has been given lead role in new ‘Constantine’ television show
NBC has announced that they have cast Matt Ryan as the lead character Constantine in the new upcoming pilot for a potential new fall series.
Matt Ryan is famous for his voice acting for “Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag’s” character Edward Kenway and as lead character Mick Rawson on CBS’ “Criminal Minds” spinoff series, “Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior.”
The NBC pilot is based on the DC comic book “Constantine”. The main character, John Constantine was a very dark character into the occult. He was a British magician, a con man, and very much an anti hero. He is described as a cynic that is foul mouthed and disillusioned. He constantly interacts with both heaven and hell and it is always an adventure.
In 2005, Warner Brothers released a theatrical version of “Constantine” with Keanu Reeves as John Constantine.
There is no word as to whether this pilot will make it off the ground but this show could really bring more interest in the supernatural.

‘A Monster Calls’ by Patrick Ness movie adaptation to start filming in September
A movie adaptation of Patrick Ness‘s acclaimed and emotionally charged young adult novel A Monster Calls is moving forward.
River Road Entertainment, Participant Media, Lionsgate International, and Focus Features announced today that they are teaming up to fund and distribute A Monster Calls, which is being produced by Apache.
Ness himself is writing the screenplay, with The Orphanage director Juan Antonio Bayona directing. Filming is expected to begin in September, with the film tentatively slated for release in 2016.
“I cannot TELL you how excited I am for the Monster Calls movie,” Ness wrote on Twitter. “I’ve seen early pre-viz and it’s going to be FREAKING AMAZING!”
A Monster Calls, which Ness wrote from an idea by late author Siobhan Dowd, follows a young boy, who uses a fantasy world of monsters to escape the trauma of his mother’s terminal illness and bullying at school.
Originally from Washington state, Ness now lives in the UK. He is also the author of the critically-acclaimed Chaos Walking trilogy and More Than This.
